Eleven Minutes From Bell Works
Holmdel is an office town in a way most of Monmouth County is not. Bell Works and the corporate campuses around it put a large number of people at a desk for most of their waking hours, and desks are the single most reliable source of the neck and upper-back complaints we treat. The drive to our Marlboro office is about eleven minutes — Roberts Road to Newman Springs Road, then west — which is short enough to fit into a lunch break.
That matters, because the most common reason a desk worker never sees anyone about their neck is that the appointment would cost half a day. It does not have to.
What We See Most Often From Holmdel
- Postural neck pain and cervicogenic headaches. The head weighs roughly as much as a bowling ball, and every degree it tilts forward multiplies what the muscles at the base of the skull have to hold. Sustained for eight hours, that produces stiffness, restricted rotation, and headaches that begin in the neck and are routinely mistaken for something else. Neck pain treatment is the most common request we get from this part of the service area.
- Upper-back and shoulder tension. A monitor at the wrong height, a laptop used as a desktop, a chair that supports nothing in particular — the mid-back takes what the workstation does not. It presents as an ache between the shoulder blades that never quite goes.
- Disc pressure from sustained sitting. Sitting loads lumbar discs more than standing. Where a disc is bulging or thinning, that load shows up as low back pain that is worse at the end of the day, sometimes with symptoms travelling into a leg. Spinal decompression exists for exactly this.
Holmdel Park and the trails around it also send us a steady trickle of weekend injuries — the classic pattern of a body that sits for five days and then asks a great deal of itself on the sixth. That is a different problem from a desk problem, and it is worth saying so: sports injury care looks at what caused the injury, not only at the part that hurts.
Your First Visit
The first appointment is an examination. Dr. Christopher Ernst takes a history, runs orthopedic and neurological testing, assesses posture directly, and takes digital X-rays on site if needed — $29, regular fee $189. The point is a specific answer: which structure is producing the symptom, and what would correcting it actually involve.
Neck symptoms in particular deserve that care in diagnosis, because joints, discs, muscles and nerves can all produce pain in overlapping places. Treating the wrong one produces temporary relief and a recurring problem.
What care looks like after that
Cervical adjustments are precise and controlled — fine work, not force. Restoring normal joint motion relieves the local irritation and lets guarded muscles stop bracing. Where inflammation in soft tissue is slow to settle, Class IV laser therapy may be added to the plan. And because a neck that hurts because of how it is loaded will hurt again if the loading does not change, Progressive Rehab® strengthens the deep neck flexors and upper-back muscles that hold your head where it belongs — alongside the workstation changes that make the correction stick.
Insurance and Cost
We are in-network with several major carriers and accept Medicare; the insurance page is the authoritative list and updates itself as agreements go live. If your plan is not one we are in-network with, discounted self-pay rates are available. If you would rather know before you book, call and the front desk will check your chiropractic benefits.
When to Stop Waiting It Out
- Neck stiffness or pain lasting more than a week, or returning regularly
- Headaches that start at the base of the skull or arrive after long screen sessions
- Pain, numbness or tingling into the shoulder, arm or hand
- An ache between the shoulder blades that no amount of stretching resolves
- Low back pain that is reliably worse at the end of a working day
Radiating arm symptoms are the ones to act on soonest. Nerve irritation tends to escalate quietly while you adapt around it, and adaptation is not recovery.
The Workstation Changes That Actually Matter
Most desk advice is a list of thirty things nobody does. In practice three changes account for most of the improvement, and they are worth doing before an appointment rather than after.
- Get the top of the screen to eye level. Everything else follows from this. A screen too low forces the head forward and down for the entire working day, and no amount of chair adjustment compensates for it. A laptop used as a primary machine cannot meet this without a stand and a separate keyboard — the screen and the keys need to be in two different places.
- Support the forearms. Unsupported arms hang from the neck and shoulders. Over eight hours that is a genuine load, and it lands precisely where desk workers report their pain. Armrests at the right height, or a desk depth that lets the forearms rest, removes it.
- Change position more often than you think is reasonable. The best posture is the next one. A sit-stand desk helps, but only if it is actually moved; a timer that gets you up every half hour does most of the same work for nothing.
None of this fixes a joint that has already lost motion — that is what the treatment is for. But it changes the load that produced the problem, and without that change the same problem returns on the same schedule.
