Back Pain Is Common. Living With It Shouldn't Be.

Back pain is the single most common reason patients walk into our Marlboro office. Some felt something give while lifting; some stiffened up gradually over months of desk work and Route 9 commutes; some have been managing the same nagging ache for years with heat, stretches, and hope. What almost all of them share is this: the pain is a symptom, and no one has yet identified the mechanical problem producing it.

That is the job. At HealthSource Chiropractic of Marlboro, Dr. Christopher Ernst starts every back-pain case with a thorough exam to identify the root cause, then builds a personalized plan that may include spinal adjustments, spinal decompression, or Class IV laser therapy depending on what the exam actually shows — a drug-free, non-surgical approach focused on lasting correction rather than temporary relief.

What's Actually Causing Your Back Pain?

"Back pain" is a description, not a diagnosis. Behind it is usually one — or a combination — of these mechanical problems:

  • Joint restriction and misalignment — spinal joints that have lost normal motion irritate the surrounding muscles and nerves, producing pain and protective stiffness.
  • Disc problems — bulging, herniated, or thinning discs change how your spine bears load, and can press on nearby nerves. When the sciatic nerve is involved, pain radiates down the leg — see our sciatica treatment page.
  • Muscular imbalance and deconditioning — weak stabilizing muscles force the wrong tissues to do the work, and they complain. Everyday patterns matter more than most people think — we wrote about that in why everyday movements matter more than you think.
  • Postural load — hours of sitting, driving, or looking down at screens quietly reshape how your spine carries you.

Different causes need different care. That is why guessing — or treating every back the same way — so often fails.

Our Approach: Relief, Correction, Resilience

Dr. Ernst structures back-pain care in three phases, which we explain in detail in the 3 phases of recovery:

Phase 1 — Relief

First, calm the pain. Targeted adjustments restore motion to restricted joints and take pressure off irritated tissue. Depending on your exam findings, care may also include Class IV laser therapy to reduce inflammation in soft tissue, or spinal decompression when discs are involved.

Phase 2 — Correction

Feeling better is not the same as being corrected. In this phase we address the alignment and movement problems that produced the pain, and begin Progressive Rehab® — structured functional exercise that rebuilds the strength your spine relies on. Progress isn't assumed; it is measured, with scheduled re-evaluations along the way.

Phase 3 — Resilience

The final phase is about keeping the problem gone: maintaining the correction, building durable movement habits, and catching small issues before they become big ones. Patients who invest in this phase are the ones we tend to see for tune-ups instead of flare-ups — the long-term payoff we describe in the long-term benefits of regular chiropractic care.

When Should You Come In?

You do not need to wait until you cannot stand up straight. These are the signs worth acting on:

  • Back pain that has lasted more than a week, or keeps coming back in episodes
  • Pain that radiates into the buttock or leg, or is joined by numbness or tingling
  • Stiffness that is worst in the morning or after sitting
  • Pain that limits the things you actually want to do — sports, yard work, playing with your kids, walking the Henry Hudson Trail

Left alone, mechanical back problems rarely improve on their own; they usually just get quieter between episodes while the underlying cause stays put.

What Your First Visit Looks Like

Your first appointment at our Marlboro office is a comprehensive new-patient exam — history, movement and orthopedic testing, and digital X-rays on-site if needed — for $29, regular fee $189. Dr. Ernst reviews the findings with you in plain language: what is wrong, what we recommend, how long it should take, and what it will cost. Same-day appointments are available, and we see patients from Marlboro Township and across Monmouth County.

If you have been trading the same back pain back and forth with ibuprofen and rest for months, the most useful thing you can do is finally get an answer. Start with the exam.

FAQ

Common Questions

How can a chiropractor in Marlboro, NJ help with back pain?

Back pain is one of the most common reasons patients visit our Marlboro office. Dr. Ernst starts with a thorough exam to identify the root cause, then builds a personalized plan that may include spinal adjustments, spinal decompression, or Class IV laser therapy depending on your condition.

What are the signs I might need to see a chiropractor?

Common signs include frequent headaches, persistent neck or back pain, stiffness or limited range of motion, numbness or tingling into an arm or leg, and pain that worsens with long periods of sitting or standing. If any of these sound familiar, a chiropractic evaluation can help identify the underlying cause before it becomes a bigger problem.

What are the long-term benefits of routine chiropractic care?

Beyond relief from back pain, neck pain, or headaches, patients who continue with routine care often see better posture, improved mobility, fewer future injuries, and less reliance on pain medication.

What is corrective chiropractic care, and how is it different from just relieving pain?

Corrective care goes beyond a quick adjustment for pain relief — it's a structured, step-by-step plan to restore proper spinal alignment and address the root cause of your discomfort, not just the symptoms. Dr. Ernst designs each corrective care plan around your specific exam findings and re-evaluates your progress along the way, rather than stopping once the pain fades.
